The Tyre Collective pilots their device with Rivian
Vehicle tyre wear is the second-largest microplastic pollutant in our oceans, toxic to marine life, and is also a significant contributor to particulate air pollution. The Tyre Collective is on a mission to capture tyre wear for a cleaner, healthier environment.
We recently joined forces with American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian to test our next-generation tyre wear capturing device on two of Rivian’s fully electric commercial vans, which deliver packages with 50% less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional delivery vehicles. Our device integrates with the vehicle itself, sitting behind each of the vehicle’s wheels to capture tyre wear before it can enter the environment.
Rivian, founded to solve what CEO and founder RJ Scaringe calls a “once-in-a-planet" challenge, takes a comprehensive approach to sustainability by working relentlessly to cut impacts from raw materials to manufacturing to customer charging through innovation. The company is taking a characteristically proactive approach to exploring methods of reducing tyre wear pollution – including our device.
Over the 4-week period between October and November 2023, we drove almost 8000 miles – capturing tyre wear at the source – and gained valuable insights and data via this initial pilot phase that will help both companies press forward in pursuit of effective and efficient solutions. Together, Rivian and The Tyre Collective will leverage these learnings in our ongoing R&D collaboration toward our mutual goal of reducing tyre wear pollution at scale.
