The Tyre Collective and Eurométropole de Strasbourg collaborate to tackle Tyre Pollution

The Tyre Collective and Eurométropole de Strasbourg are launching a new pilot this summer to address the growing issue of tyre wear pollution in cities. As part of this collaboration, The Tyre Collective’s capture device will be demonstrated in Strasbourg to capture harmful tyre particles over a week, preventing them from entering the environment. This partnership is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.

According to the recently launched study by EIT Urban Mobility: More than 96% of the European population was exposed to PM2.5 concentrations exceeding the World Health Organization’s annual air quality guideline limit in 2022. Road transport is a primary source of particulate matter in urban areas. As exhaust emissions decrease, non-exhaust emissions (NEEs) – particles from brake, tyre and road wear – are now a dominant source of urban particulate matter (PM) By working together, The Tyre Collective and Eurométropole de Strasbourg are testing new ways to reduce pollution in our cities, combining innovative environmental technology with a strong commitment to cleaner air and mobility.

Françoise Schaetzel, Vice President of Eurométropole de Strasbourg, in charge of Air Quality and Environmental Health, says: “The Eurométropole is proud to take part in the development of innovative solutions to reduce the emissions of PM, by testing the device on its vehicles. And therefore, carrying on to find new ways to be an example regarding clean mobility.”

Valentin Rabot, Vice President in charge of managing the Metropolitan Vehicle Fleet and Workshops, says: “The transformation of our vehicle fleet is part of an ambitious structural approach: to reduce our emissions, while ensuring continuity of public service. The local authority has made the strategic choice to give priority to electric vehicles, as part of a balanced energy mix in line with the requirements of the Low Emission Zone. Today, the eurometropolis’ vehicle fleet is made up of clean vehicles, in smaller numbers and used collectively.”

Hanson Cheng, CEO and Co-Founder of The Tyre Collective, says: “This is our first city partnership, and we’re proud to launch it with Strasbourg. Together, we aim to set a new benchmark for clean mobility, tackling the overlooked problem of tyre pollution and inspiring cities across Europe to act.”

“At EIT Urban Mobility, we’re proud to back innovative solutions that address urgent urban challenges. Our latest study shows that non-exhaust emissions from tyres, brakes and road wear are now the main source of road transport pollution. The TC05 project, led by The Tyre Collective and Eurométropole de Strasbourg, is a strong example of how cities and startups can work together to tackle this issue head-on. Real-world pilots like this are essential for building cleaner, healthier and more sustainable urban mobility across Europe.”. Adriana Diaz, Innovation Director at EIT Urban Mobility
